103 – Using business to change the world with Jason T. Smith

Jason T. Smith is a very impressive chap.  He has done not one or two but three related but separate things in the professional world that are very impressive.  You’ll hear a little about Jason’s story along the way but you’ll also notice that he doesn’t want to get bogged down patting himself on the back about what he’s achieved.  He’s already looking to the next big thing. A function of who he is, I guess.

Through his career, Jason has noticed some fundamental flaws in the way we typically approach building a business and leading teams.  Through trial and error he’s designed a better way. He’s turned things outside in and upside down. And he tells a fabulous story along the way.

Lessons Learned

Passion is everything

Jason started his physiotherapy business in a garage 20 years ago.  That business has grown to more than 100 locations across Australia and New Zealand generating millions of dollars in revenue.  He was able to achieve that because of his passion.  He wanted to scale-up a successful business in order to fuel his work helping developing countries.  Living purposefully is the best way to achieve your dreams.

Spherical organization

Too many businesses are run as strict hierarchies.  One level of management has to answer to the one above it and so on up the pyramid.  But Jason believes there’s a better way.  He advocates for something called “spherical organization”.  There’s no up or down, there’s no left or right. There is just a collaboration of colleagues who are all working for the same purpose.
